The following success stories shine a spotlight on the achievements of four WISTA USA members from Maersk Line, Limited; DC Metro Chapter member Nicole Botzenmayer, Hampton Roads Chapter members Christina Hughes and Paula Thompson, and Alaina Hudson. They share their unique journeys in the Maritime sector, an industry where women constitute a mere 1.28% of the global seafarer workforce. WISTA USA’s accomplishments can be attributed to its dedicated members who have enriched the industry with their diverse perspectives and contributions.
In the Shipping and Logistics sector, traditionally male-dominated, Maersk Line, Limited has consistently championed an inclusive environment for women. Nicole Botzenmayer, Program Manager of Logistics & Services, shares, “Throughout my 17-year association with the Maersk group, I’ve often found myself as the lone woman in meetings. Yet, Maersk Line, Limited’s active sponsorship of WISTA and the encouragement of colleagues to engage with local WISTA chapters is a testament to our collective push for diversity. Being a part of WISTA has been an inspiring journey, offering me a platform to interact with dynamic women from varied backgrounds, all unified in our goal to promote industry diversity.”
Christina Hughes, a Finance Business Partner with 14 years at Maersk Line Limited, speaks about the company’s Women in Leadership program, “Strategies for Success”. This initiative, aimed at empowering women in the maritime realm, inspired Hughes to combine her professional role with her passion for philanthropy. “With Maersk’s support, I have been at the forefront of our corporate giving drive with United Way and have orchestrated company volunteer events. This program also introduced me to WISTA. Being a part of this global women’s network has broadened my horizons, allowing me to glean insights that I could integrate into my role,” she elaborates.
Paula Thompson, Facility Security Officer began her maritime journey with the US Navy. She says, “After serving 20 years, I transitioned to Maersk, where I’ve now worked for over 17 years. My role, focusing on the National Industrial Security Program, isn’t what most envision when thinking of the maritime sector. With almost four decades in roles typically not associated with women, my journey has been both challenging and exhilarating. I’m eager to bring my experiences to WISTA and look forward to the enriching interactions.”
Alaina K. Hudson, a Marine Operations Analyst, expresses her gratitude for the growth opportunities she’s received at Maersk Line, Limited. “In my three years here, I’ve been able to develop professionally, master new skills, and confidently establish my place in a male-dominated team. The company’s unwavering commitment to its values, colleagues, and fostering inclusivity has been instrumental in my journey. Learning about MLL’s support for WISTA was the icing on the cake. I’m deeply thankful to MLL, WISTA, and all organizations championing the cause of women in maritime.”
In the maritime industry, where women remain a minority, the stories of Nicole, Christina, Paula, and Alaina stand as powerful testaments to resilience, ambition, and the transformative power of inclusion. Their journeys, punctuated by challenges and triumphs, underscore the critical role that organizations like WISTA International and Maersk Line, Limited’s crucial role in championing diversity. As the maritime industry charts its course into the future, it is imperative that it harnesses the rich tapestry of diverse voices, ensuring that the waves of change are steered by the collective strength of all its members.
